Destiny’s Cove Pirate & Mermaid Hand Painted Bracelet

DestinysCoveFINALweb1

This week I finished a new painting project for a wonderful customer in California, a romantic pirate and mermaid bracelet.¬† This was a new challenge from a design perspective, to have two figures in one small painting, and I spent some time researching pirates and tall ships before completing the design drawing! ūüôā

PirateFINALweb

I tweaked the size and the location of the pirate ship in the background so I could fit it on the width of the bracelet and used graphite paper to transfer the outline of the figures and details to the bare wood before I started painting.

The inside of the bracelet was painted with gold and the sea was painted primarily in greens with highlights of blue, to match one of my previous green mermaid pendants.  I focused on painting the mermaid first and capturing the shine in her hair using shades of gold, brown and yellow mixed with white.

Then I started painting the pirate and the beautiful mermaid tail.

After painting a few more details, like the tropical corals beneath her tail and some flying seagulls in the sunset it was time to give it several coats of high gloss varnish.

Blue Octopus Handpainted Sea Sediment Jasper Pendant

octopusFINAL1web

Last week I painted my first custom octopus pendant for a lovely client on a gorgeous blue and brown sea sediment pendant with 100% sterling silver bail.

To create the design first I traced around the outside of the pendant to get the shape and area I had to work with.  Then I drew the shape of the octopus to fit the area.  I wanted a flowing, curling design and came up with this, which has almost a Celtic traditional look:

octopus006webWP

I transferred the outline of the octopus to the pendant and blocked in the body colour using ultramarine and cerulean blue acrylics.

octopus007web

Then I started adding more details using lighter and darker shades of blue and highlights of sienna brown and white.  To finish, I added some highlights of gold paint, and once the paint had dried I gave it several coats of high gloss varnish.

Hand Painted Unicorn Foal Wood Box Purse

UnicornFINALFB

Recently I completed another hand painted wood box purse handbag (cigar box purse style), Unicorn Foal.  The design for this painting was based on my original unicorn drawing below.

Unicorn2fb

I traced the outline of the drawing on to the front of the wood box, using graphite transfer paper.

UnicornWIP1

Next I painted the background a beautiful ultramarine blue and started painting the unicorn in shades of white and brown.

Unicorn1WIP

Unicorn3WIPweb

Once the unicorn was complete I worked on painting the background.  The original inspiration for this painting is the very famous medieval unicorn tapestry so I wanted to emulate the tapestry garden around the unicorn, but rather than having a captive unicorn I wanted to paint a unicorn running wild and free!

Unicorn5WIPweb

Once the painting was finished the box was given many coats of high gloss varnish.

“Flying Fish Mermaid” Handpainted Mermaid Pendant

WingsFINAL3web

This morning I just finished painting this magical Flying Fish Mermaid art pendant on a large green and brown sea sediment jasper stone, with 100% Sterling Silver bail and trim.

This piece was based on an earlier drawing design of mine “Mermaid’s Drift”.

flyingfishmermaid005ETSY.jpg

For the layout I printed out a very small resized version of the drawing and placed it on the pendant to decide the best position on the stone.  The design placement worked very well with the colours in the stone Рit looked as though she was sitting on a ledge in the green sea.

Then I started painting the beautiful colours of wings, tail and body using acrylic paints.  It takes a few layers to build up the details.

The finished piece is highlighted in many fine golden brushstrokes, giving it a magical sparkle!

Whale Song Hand Painted Mermaid Bracelet

Whalesong1web

Last night I finished painting this beautiful princess mermaid kissing a baby whale wood bracelet.  This gorgeous mermaid has long blue hair and a flowing blue tail with gold and iridescent blue highlights.  The inside of bracelet is painted a beautiful gold colour.

The design was based on my original drawing below.

WhaleMermaid1fb

I transferred the outline to the wood bracelet and painted the whole background a gorgeous bright blue colour, then started painting the whale first.  I wanted to give the baby whale a very soft, cute expression by focusing on her beautiful eye.

WhaleWIPfb

WhaleWIPweb

Next I started working on the face and hair of the mermaid.  At first it was difficult to capture the profile of her face accurately.  Painting in miniature can be tricky sometimes!  My first effort looked like this:

WhaleWIP4

I wasn’t happy with the profile of her forehead, nose and chin, or her eyelashes so after some dedicated re-painting and painting and more painting, she came out looking like this, the finished bracelet:

Whalesong1web

I built up many thin layers of paint to give her skin more dimension and a soft pink colour.¬† Initially I tried more blue/purple shadows on her body and face but I found it just didn’t work for me so instead I used more pink/brown/light orange shades of paint to give her a nice “glow”.

Art & Poetry of Mermaids Mini Book Release

MermaidBook1

I was so excited today to receive my new “Art & Poetry of Mermaids” mini books back from the printers – and they look gorgeous!¬† I spent quite a bit of time putting the layout together for these, selecting the most beautiful mermaid illustrations to go with each of the lovely poems.¬† And also deciding which illustration and poem to open with and finish with.

The booklet also includes two poems written by my mother, Joy Broughton, who sadly passed away in 2002 from breast cancer.¬† I think we would’ve had a great time collaborating together on an illustrated poetry book so this book is dedicated with much love to her ūüôā

Mermaid Cave Painting

Underwatercave5web

I’ve been quiet on this blog lately but I have been busy working on a few art projects.¬† One I’ve just finished was started on¬†the spur of the moment when I decided to grab this blank canvas that had been lying around the house and spontaneously start painting a magical underwater cave scene!¬† I wanted something calm and serene in beautiful light blue turquoise colours so I covered the canvas with some blues and greens.¬† Then I mixed the paint heavily with water and allowed some of the colour to drip and slide down the canvas to represent floating sea grass.¬† With a large rounded edge brush I made up a random border of cave like rocks and magical tendrils.

painting1editedfb

The scene needed something to bring it to life so I sketched up a little girl mermaid and transferred the outline to the canvas.  Her beautiful sparkling blonde hair and blue green flowing tail add a beautiful mysterious quality to the scene.  I filled the rest of the scene with fish and underwater plants and added some more details to the floating sea grasses.

And this is the finished version of the mermaid Рhope you like it!

This painting is destined for a group fantasy art exhibition in March 2016.¬† I have plans to paint two more canvasses in the same style to make a set of three.¬† Lets see how I go! ūüôā

“Mermaid’s Faith” Hand Painted Abalone Shell Mermaid Art Pendant

MermaidsFaithPendant

This is my latest hand painted mermaid art pendant.¬† It’s painted on a beautiful green polished abalone shell (approx. 4cm high) on a sterling silver plated necklace with (lab-created) green topaz stones.

As this shell was much smaller than usual, it took some time to decide what I could paint in such a small space.  The smaller the area, the less detail can be put into the painting, even with very fine paintbrushes.  In the end I created a cameo style mermaid portrait pendant, where I could still put a lot of detail into the face and hair .  I based my painting on this sketch:

MermaidsWish3FB

The painting evolved into a redhead mermaid with long flowing hair.

MermaidPendantWIP1

I kept painting and she became a mermaid princess with branch corals and a starfish in her hair.
