Mermaid & Sea Lion Hand Painted Bracelet

SealionFinal1etsy

This week I finished painting this stunning Mermaid and Sea Lion wood bracelet.  It features a mermaid with a long orange goldfish tail and matching flowing fiery orange hair.  She is reaching playfully towards an Australian Sea Lion swimming beneath the teal blue ocean.

This painting was based on my original pencil drawing:

Mermaid and Sealion

After I sanded the wood bracelet I traced out my drawing design onto the wood using graphite transfer paper.

I painted the background in teal blues and added some dark and light patterns to show the water shadows from beneath the waves.

SealionWIP1

Then I started painting the sea lion using shades of brown overlaid with washes of blue paint to blend it into the background.

SealionWIP2

Once I was happy with the sea lion I started painting the mermaid.

Mermaid and Sealion

The inside of the bracelet is painted in metallic teal paint which has a beautiful shimmer.  The orange of the mermaid’s tail and hair really pops against the teal blue background.

“Sleaford Mere” Handpainted Mermaid Pendant Necklace

SleafordMere5insta

Recently I painted this gorgeous Mermaid pendant, “Sleaford Mere”.

Hand painted on a lovely turquoise blue and creamy brown Sea Sediment Jasper with flecks of teal green, this Mermaid Treasures Necklace is inspired by one of my favourite locations on Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, Sleaford Mere. Sleaford Mere is a beautiful salt water lake bordered by sand dunes, very close to the coast of Sleaford Bay. The colour of this beautiful lake changes each day, from bright turquoise to stormy green.

SleafordMere6sml

This magical mermaid sits curled up, with her arms wrapped around her beautiful long tail. Her tail reflects the colours of the jasper stone and magical stars surround her long wavy blonde hair. Her beautiful face looks towards us, her soft cheeks flushed with pink. This is a truly magical mermaid treasure!

SleafordMere3sml

Pendant height is 6cm (approx.) width 4.5cm. Presented on a beautiful 50cm length beaded necklace with teal, blue, green and turquoise glass and crystal beads, featuring a lobster clasp and adjustable length chain.

Serenity Mermaid Hand Painted Box

SerenityFINALfb0

Recently I finished painting this beautiful green mermaid wooden keepsake box.  This new design was based on my original mermaid sketch from November last year.

Floating3

The box was made of light weight wood and needed some sanding and wood filler – (and more sanding!) before I could start painting.  I used graphite paper to transfer the mermaid design on to the top of the box and started by painting the gold circle background.  The mermaid itself came together quite quickly and I was really happy with the colours and style of this piece.  This is the first time I have painted a mermaid with long flowing white hair with green tones and I think she turned out beautifully.

The majority of my time making this piece was taken up with painting the entire outside of the box viridian green and the inside of the box ultramarine blue, which needed several coats and was a little tricky to paint around the circle.  The inside was also decorated with gold painted starfish and faux velvet flocking, plus a small round glass mirror.  The whole box was given endless coats of high gloss varnish, which took several weeks as I had to wait for the varnish to dry in between each coat!  In the end it turned out to be a stunning little box and will be a lovely place for the new owner to store their collection of special mermaid bracelets and pendants!

Custom Baby Mermaid Portrait Drawing

babymerfinalemlwm

This week I finished a beautiful soft sleeping baby mermaid drawing in graphite, using mechanical pencils, as a custom commission for a lovely Mum of her gorgeous baby daughter. I’d previously drawn a portrait of my own daughter as a mermaid, which inspired this commission.

babymermaid003

To begin I was supplied with several photographs of the baby girl asleep.  Due to the position of the sleeping child it was necessary to combine several elements from each photograph into one drawing and I had to “imagine to life” the body shape and posture.  To help with this aspect I took extra photographs of my own daughter lying in the same position, which I re-scaled to fit a younger child in the drawing.  Once I had the general body shape and position I was able to work on the shape of the mermaid tail.

babymer001a

I aimed to make the swirls and the trailing length of the mermaid tail a nice counter-balance and a flowing visual contrast to the horizontal length of the sleeping baby.  Once the outline was sketched out, I traced it onto the final piece of paper, which also allowed me to tweak the layout of the mermaid to be more centered on the page.

babymer002web

Using the photographs as a reference I began to sketch the details of her face and work on shading the mermaid scales.  I find if I can capture the likeness in the face to begin with, then the rest of the drawing comes together more easily.

babymer003

The most time consuming aspect of this drawing was the tail and the scales which were all hand shaded with edge highlights.  I added darker shading afterwards to show shadows and to bring out the roundness of the tail.  I like to use an eraser to cut back into the pencil shading and create highlights on the skin and scales.  I also cut back into the pencil shading on the tail to create the fins and tail flutes, so they appear to be translucent.

babymerfinalemlwm

This was a challenging but beautiful custom commission and I am really happy with how soft and sweet this one turned out to be!  All in all it took about 2 and a half weeks to complete this detailed 8×10 inch portrait.

Destiny’s Cove Pirate & Mermaid Hand Painted Bracelet

DestinysCoveFINALweb1

This week I finished a new painting project for a wonderful customer in California, a romantic pirate and mermaid bracelet.  This was a new challenge from a design perspective, to have two figures in one small painting, and I spent some time researching pirates and tall ships before completing the design drawing! 🙂

PirateFINALweb

I tweaked the size and the location of the pirate ship in the background so I could fit it on the width of the bracelet and used graphite paper to transfer the outline of the figures and details to the bare wood before I started painting.

The inside of the bracelet was painted with gold and the sea was painted primarily in greens with highlights of blue, to match one of my previous green mermaid pendants.  I focused on painting the mermaid first and capturing the shine in her hair using shades of gold, brown and yellow mixed with white.

Pirate1WIP

Then I started painting the pirate and the beautiful mermaid tail.

Pirate3WIP

Pirate5WIPweb

After painting a few more details, like the tropical corals beneath her tail and some flying seagulls in the sunset it was time to give it several coats of high gloss varnish.

“Flying Fish Mermaid” Handpainted Mermaid Pendant

WingsFINAL3web

This morning I just finished painting this magical Flying Fish Mermaid art pendant on a large green and brown sea sediment jasper stone, with 100% Sterling Silver bail and trim.

This piece was based on an earlier drawing design of mine “Mermaid’s Drift”.

flyingfishmermaid005ETSY.jpg

For the layout I printed out a very small resized version of the drawing and placed it on the pendant to decide the best position on the stone.  The design placement worked very well with the colours in the stone – it looked as though she was sitting on a ledge in the green sea.

Then I started painting the beautiful colours of wings, tail and body using acrylic paints.  It takes a few layers to build up the details.

WingsWIP2

The finished piece is highlighted in many fine golden brushstrokes, giving it a magical sparkle!
