Last week I painted my first custom octopus pendant for a lovely client on a gorgeous blue and brown sea sediment pendant with 100% sterling silver bail.
To create the design first I traced around the outside of the pendant to get the shape and area I had to work with. Then I drew the shape of the octopus to fit the area. I wanted a flowing, curling design and came up with this, which has almost a Celtic traditional look:
I transferred the outline of the octopus to the pendant and blocked in the body colour using ultramarine and cerulean blue acrylics.
Then I started adding more details using lighter and darker shades of blue and highlights of sienna brown and white. To finish, I added some highlights of gold paint, and once the paint had dried I gave it several coats of high gloss varnish.
